The alternative for Gym - Boxing?

Boxing is certainly one of the tougher sports you can do from a physical perspective. You need to be fast, evasive, skilled, strong and have an ability to think while under duress or attack from your opponent.

It's a brutal sport and certainly not for the light-hearted.

There has been a real growth in boxing these days as a lot of boxing gyms have moved to provide the good elements, allowing you to train for a fight without actually having to step into a ring. With workouts varying and the pace is constantly, is the reason why boxing so good. Is boxing the ultimate alternative for gym?

If you are a runner or cyclist what benefit would you get from hitting the bags at your local boxing gym?

  • Variety - I think first and foremost having a boxing session once a week gives you something different than just focusing on your particular event.
  • Cardiovascular - boxing is intense, high cardio in short bursts of generally 3 minutes. This is giving you 'speed work' and making your body learn to recover quicker. You'll find if you have been training in short intense bursts when you head out for a run and or a cycle and max out on a climb, you will have trained yourself to recover faster, so in essence, you'll be ready to push yourself again.
  • Improved StrengthDuring a boxing workout, you may punch a bag a couple of hundreds of times which engages your upper body, lower body, and core. Having a strong core provides benefits across other sports...
  • Mental Exercise -  Thinking on your feet, and utilising the proper technique, boxing requires both skill and mental proficiency as well as physical fitness.

Give it a go... like everything it might just be what you need as part of your overall fitness regime. A good local gym that the Epoch team workout at in Christchurch is www.1moreround.co.nz
