This is a tough course, but as challenging as it is, it is also one of the most picturesque in the Challenge Family.
You kick start the day with a swim in Lake Wanaka, a glacial feed lake which even in the height of summer is only between 15-16 degrees in temperature. You then jump on a bike and head along the west side of the lake out to Glendu Bay, you then track through town and head to Lake Hawea before winding your way back to Wanaka township. The bike leg has a lot of undulating, short pitched climbs which combined with the usual winds can make the bike leg a tough day at the office.
The run is mainly 'off trial' following the lake edge and then the Clutha River as far as Albert Town. There is one little hill which always seems bigger than it is after such an arduous swim and bike.
The key to Challenge Wanaka success is not only the location but also the community that supports the event. The course is littered with people cheering you a long the course and the vibe in town and at the athletes village is just 'fun'.
So if you haven't done it...do it. And if you have done it... do it again.
